There are multiple ways of installing IPython. This page contains simplified installationinstructions that should work for most users. Our official documentationcontains more detailed instructionsfor manual installation targeted at advanced users and developers.
Instructions for a supported install of Homebrew are on the homepage. This script installs Homebrew to /usr/local so that you don't need sudo when you brew install. It is a careful script; it can be run even if you have stuff installed to /usr/local already. It tells you exactly what it will do before it does it too.
- Install homebrew by following the instructions on the homebrew homepage, and then use homebrew to install Python as follows: brew install python After the installations are complete, verify that Python 3 is available as python and python3, and that pip is also installed.
- How to Install Python 3.8 with Homebrew. Installing an updated version of Python 3.8 (as of time of writing) is super easy with HomeBrew. Of course you will need Homebrew installed on the Mac before you can use the Homebrew method, but if you're interested in messing around with Python then Homebrew will probably appeal to you anyway.
